We are now well over halfway through 2023, and as a leading office design company, we have seen so many new office design trends creeping in that we are loving! In this article, we have gathered our interior designers’ top 4 favourite trends to share with you.
Flexibility
As hybrid working is ever-increasing in popularity, we don’t see this style of work leaving any time soon. However, a change in the way we work means a shift in the requirements of a modern office. In 2023 so far, we have seen a shift towards flexibility in office design. A great example is temporary or demountable partitions, which allow a room to be divided up depending on the demands of the day. One minute you can have a large open-plan office, and the next you have multiple smaller rooms ready for a day of meetings.
Another way we have been achieving flexibility with our clients this year is by taking time to really understand the requirements of the space. In doing so, we can create a multi-functional office which flows beautifully and can change easily depending on the day. For example, office privacy pods and meeting booths provide a place for employees to hold virtual meetings, work quietly away from the main office or take a break away from their desks.
A Little Home Comfort
Linking with our point on hybrid working, with so many of us used to working with our home comforts, it is only natural that these are slowly working their way into our offices now too.
There are so many benefits to having home comforts in the office. Creating certain breakout zones with comfortable furniture can mimic our own lounges at home, making employees feel at ease in the office. They also provide great spaces to decompress and destress during a busy day.
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) recommends that employees should take regular breaks away from their screens throughout the day to avoid nasty headaches, eyestrain and other health-related problems that come from your digital displays. Having a comfortable break room can not only provide space to relax and recharge, but to also collaborate with colleagues away from the desk (we often find this helps with creativity too!).
In addition, having a fully functional kitchen space is becoming more central to employee wellbeing. This is because it encourages employees to take their lunch break away from their desks and offers an opportunity to eat a good meal, setting them up for the rest of the day.
Sustainability
Creating a sustainable office has been at the forefront of designers’ minds for a few years now, and 2023 has been no different. This is especially true as we have experienced the cost of living rising, putting extra pressure on businesses. With consumer spending down and business expenses up, sustainable office design has been a great way to not only reduce our impact on the environment but also reduce our outgoings.
One way we love incorporating this in our own office designs is with glass partitioning. If your office needs dividing into multiple smaller rooms, this may be more functional but it could block natural light, increasing the need for artificial light. Glass partitions help to increase the flow of natural light across the office. Great for the environment, the bank and employee motivation too!
Digital Technology
Finally, with the rise in Zoom, Teams and every other video conferencing system you can name, the demand for a digitally advanced office has never been higher. Charging outlets on every wall and video conferencing built into the room are just two of the ways we have achieved a more digitally connected office for our clients.
